Nordmann Christmas Tree – The best option for Christmas !

The most decorated Christmas Tree

Nordman Fir is the best-selling fir variety in the world and consequently the one that is most decorated!! It is symmetrical, with a classic triangular shape, has branches arranged to give way to globes and decorations, is thick and well built.
Among the countries that sell Christmas Trees, Denmark is one of the most important, with 10-12 million trees sold per year.
  • Are you curious and would like to know more about the Nordmann Christmas Tree? So let's go...
Why is the Nordmann Christmas Tree so special?

The Nordmann Tree was named after Finnish botanist Alexander von Nordmann, who discovered it in Georgia. The botanist was attracted by the dark green color, the triangular shape, the consistency of the branches, the long, soft needles and the discreet smell of resin. Nordmann fir is found in Turkey, Georgia, northern Armenia, the mountains around the Black Sea and the Russian Caucasus.

The scientific name is Abies Nordmanniana.
The tree can reach around 55-/65 m in height and 2 m in diameter, grows faster than other fir species and is disease resistant. The resin does not smell as strong as other species and does not cause allergies. A 2m pine tree has around 200,000 needles.

In addition to what has already been mentioned, it remains fresh for a long time after being cut and the needles do not fall out. All these qualities made Nordman the most requested Christmas Tree. It began to be cultivated in abundance in Holland, this is how spruce farms appeared. Still, the country in which the Nordmann fir adapted best was Denmark, where there is an association of fir producers - Danish Christmas Tree Association - which has around 4000 members, all producers of Christmas fir trees, the fir Nordmann is the one that is most produced.

Bernt Johan Collet had a spruce farm in Sydsjaelland for 50 years - The Collet Farm. It is one of the largest spruce producers in Denmark, harvesting around 600,000 spruce trees annually in 17 countries.
The renowned producer defines this process as slow and that it is essential to be patient to make a profit. Trees need 4 years from the time they are seeded until they are removed and planted outdoors. Until then, they grow in greenhouses specially arranged and carefully prepared for this purpose.
After this phase, it takes another 8 years for the tree to reach the size at which it can be cut down. In other words, to become profitable, the farm needs 12 years.

The busiest period on the Collet farm is the harvest period, which is in late autumn and lasts about 3 weeks.

In this short space of time, the first ones are harvested, packaged, palatized, loaded onto trucks and sent to 17 countries. Before harvesting, the cones are collected, weeds are removed and the trees are marked. At this time, the number of employees increases from 20 to 260. They work in 3 shifts so that everything is ready on time. Around 1000 trucks are loaded and arrive in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Norway, Poland and other countries in Europe and the world.

Recommendations from farmers to make the most of the Christmas Tree:
  • The tree should not be suddenly transported from a very low temperature outside to a high temperature inside.
  • Adaptation must be done little by little and, if possible, keep the pine tree in a cooler place before entering the house;
  • To last as long as possible, the stem must be placed in a bowl of water. Before placing it in the bowl, cut off a min portion. 1 cm from the stem for better absorption;
  • Fir absorbs moisture, and through the needles it is advisable to occasionally spray it with water from a spray bottle. The same should be done with fir trees in pots;
  • The tree should be as far away from the heat source as possible. The colder it is, the longer it lasts.
  • Christmas Trees bring joy to us in this wonderful and dazzling season. There is nothing like getting together with family and friends and enjoying such a unique and special time, with all that it has to offer. It's one of the best times of the year and one of the most unforgettable!!
  • With that said, and after these various curiosities…It remains for us to wish everyone a merry Christmas, with health, peace and lots of joy!! May the Christmas spirit be filled with beautiful decorations, good food and lots of sweets!!

Always at your disposal,
Yours sincerely,
